James Paul Hovis, MD

Paul Hovis, MD treats all conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand from simple to complex. He specializes in operative and non-operative treatment of adult and pediatric fractures, tendon injuries/problems, ligament injuries, vascular injuries/problems, and nerve injuries/problems of the hand and upper extremity. He also specializes in operative and non-operative treatment of degenerative conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand, as well as brachial plexus injuries and congenital hand deformities. Dr. Hovis additionally performs arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist and specializes in microsurgery.

Dr. Hovis was born and raised in Arlington, TX. He attended college at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He then received his medical education at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, TX where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, a distinction of top medical students. He continued on to complete an Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, MD, receiving extensive training at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, one of the first and busiest trauma centers in the country. After residency, he completed an ACGME accredited fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the prestigious Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, also one of the busiest trauma centers in the country. Here Dr. Hovis gained further specialization in treating shoulder to fingertip pathology from leaders in the field. Additionally, Dr. Hovis has numerous journal publications and national-level presentations distinguishing him as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Hovis believes it is an honor to be involved in the care of his patients, and he makes it a priority that they return to maximum function. He is married and enjoys traveling, playing sports, home improvement projects, reading, working out, video games, and spending time with his two French bulldogs.
