What Is Shoulder Instability?
Shoulder instability occurs when the head of the upper arm bone moves partially or completely out of the shoulder socket. This happens when the capsule, ligaments, or labrum that stabilize the joint become stretched, torn, or detached, allowing the shoulder to slip out of position.
Because the shoulder has a wide range of motion and a relatively shallow socket, it is more prone to instability than other joints. Once a shoulder dislocates, it may become vulnerable to repeated episodes, which is known as chronic shoulder instability.

Symptoms of Shoulder Instability
Symptoms can range from mild looseness to repeated dislocations. Common symptoms include:
- Shoulder pain with movement
- Feeling that the shoulder is “loose” or slipping
- Recurrent shoulder dislocations
- Clicking or popping sensation
- Weakness in the shoulder
