Thank you for your interest in the TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery Student Observation Program. The purpose of this program is to provide educational opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, and healthcare careers.
Participation in the program is voluntary and subject to the following Terms & Conditions.
Eligibility Requirements
To participate in the Student Observation Program, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Complete all required application materials.
- Comply with all TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Demonstrate professional conduct throughout the observation experience.

Observer Responsibilities
Participants are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times while participating in the observation program.
Observers agree to:
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Follow all clinic, hospital, and facility policies.
- Follow all safety, infection control, and workplace protocols.
- Remain under the supervision of authorized TMI personnel.
- Avoid disruption of clinic or surgical operations.
- Follow all instructions provided by physicians, nurses, staff members, and facility personnel.
- Refrain from participating in patient care activities unless specifically authorized by the supervising physician or facility.
Failure to comply with these requirements may result in immediate dismissal from the observation program.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Participants may be exposed to confidential information during the course of their observation experience, including patient health information and proprietary business information.
By participating in the Student Observation Program, observers agree to:
- Protect the privacy and confidentiality of all patients.
- Comply with all applicable privacy laws and regulations, including HIPAA.
- Access information only when specifically authorized and necessary for the observation experience.
- Refrain from discussing patient information with unauthorized individuals, including friends, family members, classmates, or social media audiences.
- Refrain from copying, photographing, recording, sharing, transmitting, publishing, or otherwise disclosing confidential information.
- Maintain confidentiality both during and after the completion of the observation experience.
Any violation of confidentiality requirements may result in immediate removal from the program and may subject the participant to additional legal consequences where applicable.
Technology, Photography & Recording Policy
To protect patient privacy and facility security:
- Photography is prohibited unless expressly authorized.
- Audio recording is prohibited.
- Video recording is prohibited.
- Livestreaming or broadcasting of any kind is prohibited.
- Observers may not use personal devices to capture patient information, medical procedures, or facility operations.
Violation of this policy may result in immediate removal from the observation program.
Operating Room Observation Requirements
Participants approved for operating room (OR) observations must comply with all applicable surgical facility requirements.
Observers agree to:
- Complete any required orientation or credentialing before entering an operating room.
- Follow all sterile field protocols.
- Wear all required surgical attire, including scrubs, masks, hair coverings, and other required protective equipment.
- Avoid touching sterile instruments, supplies, equipment, or surgical areas.
- Maintain an appropriate distance from the surgical field.
- Follow all instructions from the surgical team.
- Immediately report any injury, exposure, accident, or safety concern.
- Comply with all policies established by the hospital or surgical facility hosting the observation experience.
Failure to comply with operating room requirements may result in immediate removal from the facility and termination of observation privileges.
Assumption of Risk
Participants understand that healthcare environments involve inherent risks, including but not limited to:
- Exposure to infectious diseases.
- Exposure to bodily fluids.
- Exposure to medical equipment and instruments.
- Exposure to clinical and surgical environments.
By participating in the Student Observation Program, participants voluntarily assume all risks associated with their participation.
Participants agree to follow all safety instructions and immediately report any injury, exposure, or safety concern to supervising personnel.
Health Insurance
Participants are responsible for maintaining their own health insurance coverage and for any medical expenses incurred as a result of participation in the observation program.
TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery does not provide medical insurance coverage for observers.
Release of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, participants release and hold harmless TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery, its physicians, employees, agents, contractors, affiliated hospitals, and affiliated surgical facilities from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses arising from participation in the Student Observation Program, except where prohibited by law.
Non-Employment Status
Participation in the Student Observation Program does not create an employment relationship with TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery.
Observers:
- Are not employees of TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery.
- Will not receive compensation or benefits.
- Are participating solely for educational and observational purposes.
Acknowledgment
By submitting a Student Observation Program application, you acknowledge and agree that:
- You are at least 18 years of age.
- You have read and understand these Terms & Conditions.
- You agree to comply with all program requirements and facility policies.
- You understand the confidentiality obligations associated with participation.
- You voluntarily assume the risks associated with participation.
- You understand that participation is educational in nature and does not establish employment with TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery.
