Bill Robertson Profile

Dr. William J. Robertson is a specialist in sports medicine injuries, as well as the arthroscopic and open management of shoulder, knee, and hip disorders. He currently serves as the Head Team Physician and Medical Director for the Dallas Stars NHL Hockey Club, a role he has held for the past 13 years. In addition, Dr. Robertson is a consultant to the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Team and currently serves as the Head Team Physician for Mansfield High School. He previously served as the team physician for the Dallas Defenders Semi-professional Football Team and the Head Team Physician for Dallas Jesuit College Preparatory School.

Before joining the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedics (TMI), Dr. Robertson spent seven years at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he served as Chief of the Sports Medicine & Shoulder Service. As an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Robertson played a pivotal role in training the next generation of orthopedic surgeons at both UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospitals, earning teaching awards from the UT Southwestern orthopedic residents on two separate occasions. He currently holds an academic appointment as Associate Professor at the TCU Burnett School of Medicine.

Dr. Robertson completed his undergraduate education at Brown University, where he was a four-year letter winner and starting linebacker for the Brown University Football Team. Following his senior season, he was selected to play with other Ivy League All-Stars in the Epson Ivy Bowl in Osaka, Japan. He went on to attend medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City, where he served as president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, graduated first in his class, and was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence by the State of New York.

Dr. Robertson completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, consistently ranked the nation’s top orthopedic hospital by U.S. News and World Report. During his residency, he received the Distinguished House Staff Award from Weill Cornell Medical Center for outstanding patient care. He subsequently completed a traveling fellowship at the Balgrist and Schulthess Clinics in Switzerland, where he studied hip joint preservation and femoroacetabular impingement techniques under Professor Reinhold Ganz.

Dr. Robertson further advanced his training with a sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction fellowship at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and several collegiate and high school teams.

He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, videos, and presentations in the field of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Dr. Robertson is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and has served as an elected member of the NHL Team Physician Society (NHLTPS) Executive Committee.

Dr. Robertson’s practice philosophy centers on delivering the highest level of evidence-based care to his patients, utilizing the latest techniques and research to expedite return to function, enhance performance, and alleviate pain.

    I am a 69 year old woman. I have had both knees replaced by another surgeon. I developed a bone infection in my right knee. I was sent to a specialist who replaced the knee along with all the ligaments, tendons, etc.. I couldn't walk or even stand on it without it giving way and falling for 3 years....

    I am 65 years old and have been active most of my life. In 2000, I tore both of my rotator cups and the orthopedic surgeon told me that with a little rest both of them would repair, but the doctor was wrong.
